Moonslice presented us with an exciting opportunity to rethink the pizzeria experience. The client’s brief was simple but powerful: place the pizza oven—what we call the Pizza Gallery—at the heart of the space. The goal was to celebrate the craft of pizza-making, allowing guests to see the process up close. From this starting point, the spatial layout naturally unfolded into a dynamic two-level design. The lower seating area opens onto the street, creating a lively connection with the surroundings, while the elevated dining level invites guests to immerse themselves in the art of crafting pizza.

A key aspect of the design was the use of layered veneers and patterns. Drawing inspiration from Ettore Sottsass’ Tartar console and the Memphis movement, we applied a mix of veneers across the entire space rather than just on furniture. This approach, combined with graphic vinyl flooring and bespoke splattered fabrics designed with a textile artist, brought a playful, retro energy to the interior. The fabrics, inspired by Pollock’s 1940s dynamic splashes of color, created a vintage yet contemporary feel that feels both immersive and unexpected.

Selecting furniture and fittings was guided by the architectural shell, which serves as the main character of the space. Pieces like Matteo Grassi MG5 leather chairs, classic Eames plastic chairs from Vitra, and lighting from Louis Poulsen, and Hay were carefully chosen to complement the shell without competing with it. Tables and stools were bespoke, and the fabric bench was commissioned from Venezuelan textile artist Fernanda Mogna, adding a tactile, personal touch.

The biggest challenge was working with multiple patterns, textures, and two floor levels, ensuring seamless transitions throughout. Careful detailing allowed all elements to flow harmoniously, while the mix of veneers, graphic elements, and bespoke fabrics introduced a new layer to our design philosophy. We are particularly proud of how the space balances simplicity and dynamism, showcasing the Pizza Gallery while celebrating craftsmanship, color, and texture. Moonslice ultimately became a space that is playful, immersive, and memorable—a fresh take on what a pizzeria can be.
